App Store Optimization (ASO) Checklist: How to Get More Downloads from Google Play and the App Store

Efada Editorial Team4 min read

App Store Optimization helps people understand and discover your app, then decide whether it is right for them. This checklist covers Google Play and the App Store without treating keywords as a shortcut to rankings. A stronger listing can support discovery and conversion, but downloads also depend on demand, app quality, competition and distribution.

App Store Optimization (ASO) Checklist: How to Get More Downloads from Google Play and the App Store

App Store Optimization starts with a clear audience

Write down the job your app helps someone complete and the words customers use to describe it. Separate category terms from specific problems. Competitor listings can show common expectations, but copying their claims or repeating their keywords is not a strategy.

Choose which countries and languages you can genuinely support. Localise the value proposition, screenshots and support information, not just the title. For Arabic-speaking users, check right-to-left presentation inside the app and on the creative assets.

Prepare the text fields for each store

On Google Play, the app name, short description and full description have different roles. Google’s current guidance limits these to 30, 80 and 4,000 characters respectively. Keep the main benefit easy to understand and avoid misleading claims, promotional ranking language or keyword stuffing.

On the App Store, the name and subtitle each allow up to 30 characters, and the keyword field allows up to 100 characters. Use relevant terms and avoid duplicating words unnecessarily in the keyword field. Review the latest platform rules before submitting; text fields and review requirements can change.

Make screenshots answer real questions

The icon should be recognisable at small sizes. Screenshots should reveal the actual app experience and communicate one useful benefit at a time. Lead with the task customers care about instead of decorative screens or unsupported performance claims.

Check readability on a phone, the accuracy of shown features and consistency with the current app version. A preview video can help when motion explains the product, but it must represent the app honestly.

  • Show the main action and what users can expect next.
  • Use legible captions that fit the local language.
  • Check required dimensions and device formats in each store.

Treat product quality as part of ASO

A compelling listing cannot compensate for crashes, slow loading or an unclear first-use experience. Review stability and onboarding alongside store assets. Google Play’s Android vitals provides quality signals such as user-perceived crash and ANR rates.

Ask for ratings at an appropriate moment using the platform’s supported mechanisms. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ratings. Read review themes as product feedback and respond helpfully without disclosing user information.

Test one meaningful hypothesis at a time

Google Play store listing experiments and Apple product page optimization can compare eligible listing assets. Start with a question such as whether showing the core workflow first helps visitors understand the app. Use the platform’s eligibility and experiment requirements rather than assuming both stores offer identical controls.

A small sample can produce an unstable result. Allow enough data to accumulate, consider seasonality and acquisition-source changes, and avoid changing unrelated assets halfway through a test. Record what changed and what outcome would justify keeping it.

Measure downloads and the experience afterwards

Track store impressions, listing visits and downloads with clear definitions. Then connect acquisition quality to activation and retention in your own analytics where permitted. An increase in installs with poor activation may signal that the listing attracts the wrong expectations.

Keep an ASO change log and review search terms, conversion and user feedback together. Efada’s SEO & ASO service can help you frame a store-listing review around relevance, creative clarity and measurement, without promising a ranking or download uplift.
